The Sporting Film - Palio
Horse Racing : Intrigue, bribery, corruption... and it's not about FIFA.
The Palio is said to be the oldest horse race in the world. You can get into the details of the race and its history here. We aren't going to go into that detail this time, although we might in the future.
The ancient race itself is fascinating, and the film does a good job of weaving its history into the plot, which centres on two jockeys, master and apprentice, fighting for the 2015 Palios (there are two races per year). The really interesting bit is that for a year in the build up, the teams set about gaining an advantage in whatever way they can, and everyone knows it. Plenty of offers that can be refused and negotiated it seems.
It is a wonderful film if you are a fan of any sport, and if you are a fan of horse racing this goes down as a 'must see'. It is not often you get to see a film about a sporting event that is so huge, yet so unknown at the same time. Sienese passion is quite something to behold, and boy are they passionate about The Palio.
We defy you to watch this and not want to go and watch the spectacle, where ironically, although the spectacle is the race, the Palio itself is much bigger than that. You can watch it on Amazon, Netflix, and probably a whole host more. Click the banner for a little trial and we get some wedge too. Thanks for that.
