Brief history of the Dallas Cowboys

American Football is the most popular sport in Texas, and the Cowboys are ‘America’s Team’.

Did you know that the Dallas Cowboys haven’t always been the Dallas Cowboys?

Before they were the Cowboys, they were known as the Yanks and then the Texans.

These versions of the team didn’t have much success, as they eventually folded in the 1959 season after suffering through a 1-11 season.

They went through 16 owners during this time. The principal owner was Giles Miller, a textile owner by trade.

It wasn’t until the 1960 season, when Clint Murchison Jr and Tom Landry became owner and Head Coach respectively, that the team changed to the Dallas Cowboys.

After just a few years, the team achieved their first trophies and honours.

Major accomplishments

The Cowboys started their first of a string of winning seasons in 1966.

They then went 20 years without experiencing another losing season until the late 1980s.

In that time frame, they won two of their five Super Bowls (1971 and 1977), winning their other three in 1992, 1993 and 1995.

Most Famous Dallas Cowboys players

Troy Aikman

Troy Alkman was a six-time pro bowler. During his career, he led the Cowboys to the three Super Bowls that they won in the 1990s.

He also won the Bowl XVII MVP, the 1997 Walter Payton Award and he was the first pick of the 1989 NFL draft.

Aikman spent his entire career from 1989-2000 with the Cowboys.

Emmit Smith

Emmit Smith’s breakout season took place in 1993, when he rushed the ball 283 times for 1,486 yards, won a slew of accomplishments and led the Cowboys to the Super Bowl.

He also led them to the Super Bowl in the 1992 and 1995 seasons.

Smith was one of the leading “power backs” of the era, meaning that he was one of the biggest, as opposed to the fastest, running backs at 5 '9 and 221 pounds.

He is considered by some to be the best running back of all time.

Dak Prescott

Dak Prescott is the current Cowboys quarterback, and he won the 2016 AP offensive player of the year.

Micheal Irvin

Michael Irvin was a leading wide receiver on all three Super Bowl teams in the 1990s.

He went to the Pro Bowl five times. Irvin also led the league in passing yards in 1991.

He may have achieved more during his career, but he was arrested multiple times for drug use.

Tony Romo

Tony Romo is the Dallas Cowboys all-time passing leader, with 34,183 yards and 248 touchdowns.

He was also a four-time pro bowler.

Why do the Cowboys play in blue and white?

While some NFL teams, such as the Green Bay Packers, have changed their logo and colors throughout the years, the Cowboys are not one of these teams.

Since their founding, the Cowboys have worn white jerseys with royal blue stripes and numbers.

In particular, the team always wears white whenever playing on their home ground.

This is because the weather is so warm in Texas. In fact, the old Texas Stadium didn’t have a retractable roof- so it got very warm during Summer games.

For their entire career, the Cowboys logo has also stayed the same. It is a five-pointed star. This is supposed to be symbolic of the flag used in the state - and American football is the most popular sport in Texas.

Their very first logo was also supposed to represent God, country and the state of Texas. In 1964, Outfitting Manager Jack Eskridge made the star blue with a white outline.
