Why Were Leather Footballs Laced? The 1930 World Cup Anomaly

Leather footballs were laced because early match balls lacked modern air valves, requiring a heavy leather string to hold an internal rubber bladder inside the casing.
Before modern synthetic materials and internal valve systems, inflating a football was a manual, two-step operation. Craftsmen inserted a pig bladder or rubber pouch inside a heavy 12-panel leather shell, pumped it up through a protruding stem, and then tucked that stem back inside.
To keep the inflated bladder securely housed and prevent it from bulging out mid-match, the outer leather casing had to be tightly laced shut, much like a shoe.

During the inaugural 1930 World Cup Final between Uruguay and Argentina, the two nations couldn't agree on whose ball to use due to differences in leather, weight, and lacing.
To settle the dispute, Argentina provided their preferred ball (the Tiento) for the first half and led 2-1. Uruguay switched to their heavier San Martín ball for the second half and stormed back to win 4-2.
The invention of the internal valve in the mid-20th century eventually rendered laced footballs obsolete, eliminating both the unpredictable bounces and the dreaded forehead bruises from wet leather laces.
Before valves, World Cup finals were literally decided by which team's preferred laced leather ball was used.
