Born in Belgrade, SFR Yugoslavia in 1978 during an era of political uncertainty, Dejan Stanković would grow up to play at 3 World Cup’s for Yugoslavia in 1998, Serbia and Montenegro in 2006 and Serbia in 2010.
The International Career of Dejan Stankovic
At International level, Stanković won a combined 103 caps and he scored 15 goals. He made his debut for Yugoslavia against South Korea in 1998 and he went on to represent them at the World Cup later that year.
By 2006 Yugoslavia had split up and his country had become Serbia and Montenegro which is who he played for at the 2006 WC and by 2010 Serbia had become independent from Montenegro so he represented Serbia in South Africa to create history.
Club Career
At club level, Stanković made his first forays into the professional game with his local side, Red Star Belgrade and in 1995 he made his debut for the first team. In 4 seasons the legendary midfielder scored 39 goals in 113 games helping the club to a League title and 3 cup successes.
Lazio came calling in 1998 and he signed for the Italian club for €24 million. He became a fan favourite with Lazio fans who nicknamed him “The Dragon” as he racked up 208 appearances and 33 goals. He was also part of the famous Lazio side which won the Scudetto in 1999/2000. In total, he won 7 major honours at Lazio.
In 2004 Stanković signed for Inter Milan and he stayed there until he retired in 2013.
In those 9 years, he scored 42 goals in 326 games and he won an impressive 5 League titles, 4 Coppa Italia’s, 4 Supercoppa’s, 1 Champions League and the Club World Cup.
After retiring as a player in 2013, Stanković went into management, he is currently the manager of Red Star Belgrade where he won the Serbian League title last season.
