Football: How Juventus adopted the kit of Notts County
Our new partner ‘The School of Football’ delves into one of sports most unlikely tales.
Did you know? Juventus adopted their iconic black and white strip from English side Notts County.
When Juventus was founded in 1897 they first wore white shirts with black socks and then a pink shirt.
By 1903 the pink shirts had faded so much that Juventus asked their English player John Savage (another amazing story!) if he knew any shirt suppliers back in England which he did.
The supplier was a Notts County fan and he shipped black and white stripped kits out to Turin which ultimately gave birth to their nickname the “bianconeri’ (the black and whites). They would never look back.
After the 108-year link, Juventus invited League One Notts County over to Turin to open their new 41,000 seater stadium in a friendly on the 8th of September 2011.
The stadium was originally known as the Juventus Arena but has since been renamed the Allianz Stadium.
The game amazingly finished 1-1 after Luca Toni put The Old Lady 1-0 up in the 53rd minute when Rob Burch saved a Quagliarella penalty but Toni was there to put away the rebound.
Notts County’s top scorer at the time, Lee Hughes came off the bench for the second half and scored a late equaliser in the 87th minute, Notts County would hold on for the last 5 minutes to claim a memorable draw.
