Isolated Memories - Sam Northeast Interview
A trip down memory lane with… Sam Northeast
We met for a virtual catch up with Hampshire and England Lions cricketer Sam Northeast…
First Car?
First car was a Volvo. Can’t remember the exact name of it but it was a hatchback with a Kim Kardashian boot.
First ever Job?
First job was actually picking up litter at the open at Royal St Georges. Wasn’t a bad way to watch a bit of golf and get paid for it
Can you remember your first ever big purchase?
My first big purchase was my flat in Canterbury which I wasn’t really ready for and lived off pot noodles for quite a few months
First memory of your sport?
I used to always go and watch cricket up at Canterbury as a youngster and watch the likes of Steve Waugh, Dean Headley and Carl Hooper. Very fond memories and was a pleasure to follow in their footsteps
First day on the job in sport?
I remember walking into the changing room and sitting in Min Patel’s spot. That wasn’t a good start to my professional career.
Favourite memory of your life in sport?
There isn’t necessarily one thing that sticks out. Cricket is a tough game and can mentally drain you so when you get the rewards for all the effort it can be really satisfying.
No doubt when I finish I will look back and think of the good days and miss the comradery in the changing room.
Did you ever contemplate doing something different?
No, I never have done is the simple answer. I knew this was what I wanted to do. However, there were plenty of ups and downs along the way
If you had to work in another sport what would it be?
Probably NFL. I just love everything about the sport. I think we would all like to be the quarterback of a franchise. We can all dream right
Sporting Hero?
Brian Lara is still my favourite player to watch. What a genius he was. I reckon he could still play now
Isolation tip?
Definitely going to be a strange year for everyone but I think people like structure. If you can get into a daily routine it will help pass the time. I have started a few courses and doing a few stupid videos to pass the time.
