Gerardo Bedoya - ‘The Beast’ who saw red. A lot

Gerardo Bedoya has the unwanted record of being the player who has been sent off the most times in professional football.

The defender/defensive midfielder was sent off 47 times in his 20 year career between 1995 and 2015.

The Colombian nicknamed “The Beast” played 552 club games and scored 52 times for 13 different clubs.

The majority of his domestic football was played in his home country although his career path included spells in Argentina with Racing Club de Avellandea, Club Atlético Colón and notably a 3 game stint at Boca Juniors.

He also played for Mexican side Club Puebla in 2005.

Bedoya enjoyed some domestic success along the way, winning the Colombian League with Deportivo Cali in 1998, the Primera División in Argentina with Racing Club de Avellaneda and a second career Colombian league title with Santa Fe in 2012.

The biggest achievement of Bedoya’s career was being a part of the Colombian side that won the 2001 Copa America as the host nation.

He started in the final at left back and played the whole 90 minutes as the hosts beat Mexico 1-0 in the final thanks to a 66th-minute goal from Iván Córdoba.

On his debut as an assistant coach as part of Alexis García’s coaching staff at Independiente Sante Fe, Bedoya lasted just 21 minutes before he was shown red and sent to the stands after he directed a 10 minute onslaught of abuse at the referee when Junior FC scored an equaliser.
