Tomáš Suslov: Slovakia’s answer to David Silva

Tomáš Suslov is making huge strides in the Eredivisie and on the international stage. Under the tutelage of Dutch great Arjen Robben at Groningen, he is turning more than a few heads around the continent.

Where was Tomáš Suslov born?

Suslov was born in Spišská Nová Ves, a city more known for its musical festival than its athletes. After spending 8 years in various youth academies in Slovakia, he was spotted by FC Groningen who signed him as a 16-year-old in 2018.

What position does Tomáš Suslov play?

For his club, Suslov has been deployed mainly as an attacking midfielder in manager Danny Buijs’ preferred 4-2-3-1 formation. His adaptability allows him to play as a right-winger or as a striker. Wherever he plays he is given the freedom to roam and create.

At the international level he has found himself as the right-sided winger in a 4-3-3. A naturally left-footed player, he likes to cut in from the right and affect the game.

What are Tomáš Suslov’s attributes?

A highly skilful and imaginative attacker, Suslov’s close control allows him to drift by defenders at ease. He intuitively knows how to find space and cause problems for opposing defenders. He rarely seems flustered or in a rush, a trait shared by all the top players. As his career progresses he will hope to add more consistency to his performances, but his natural technical ability is clear for all to see.

When did Tomáš Suslov get his chance?

After winning a Dutch u17 title in his first season with Groningen he was promoted to the u19 squad the following season. A total of 9 goals in 25 matches at that level was enough to earn him his senior debut at the end of the 2019/20 season, playing the final 2 minutes of a 1-0 defeat to VVV Venlo.

He was then given the unenviable task of replacing Arjen Robben who picked up an injury 30 minutes into his long-awaited comeback. Impressive displays saw his playing time increase and when Robben picked up a long-term injury a few weeks later, Suslov saw his chance and took it. By the turn of the year he had guaranteed his place in the starting XI.

What impact has Tomáš Suslov had?

Suslov’s performances helped Groningen to an 8th place finish in the Eredivisie, amassing 50 points, their highest return for 5 years. After Robben’s injury, there was a sense of dread among the Green and White Army. His return to Dutch football was one of the headline stories of the summer and fans hoped this would spur them on into European contention.

Suslov’s emergence helped allay any fears of a relegation battle and has given the club much reason for optimism. With Arjen Robben back fit and firing and acting as a mentor, the sky's the limit for the Slovakian.

When did Tomáš Suslov make his international debut?

Slovakia national team manager Štefan Tarkovič handed Suslov his maiden call-up for November’s round of internationals. After watching from the bench for the first 2 games he made his debut on 18th November 2020, playing the final 30 minutes of a 2-0 defeat to Czech Republic in a Nations League game. His first start would come 4 months later, impressing in a disappointing 2-2 draw with Malta.

With Slovakia’s aging squad heading for Euro 2020, manager Tarkovič realised the need to inject some youthful exuberance. Suslov has been included in their provisional squad for the tournament and will hope to make an impact, given the chance.

How much is Tomáš Suslov worth?

Recent reports have linked Suslov with a £3.5million move to the Premier League. At that cost, it’s of little wonder he looks set to leave this summer. Groningen has a history of selling cheap. Virgil van Dijk moved to Celtic for £2.5million in 2013 and Luis Suarez was sold to Ajax for £6.75million in 2007. Their careers haven’t panned out all that badly and Suslov will hope he’s the next off the conveyor belt.

According to transfermarkt.com, Suslov’s value stands at £990,000. A very conservative figure for an 18-year-old with international experience. (Surely add the £10k to make him a £1million player transfermarkt, do the lad a favour).

Which clubs have been linked with Tomáš Suslov?

According to his agent, as many as 15 clubs around the continent are closely monitoring Suslov’s situation. In recent weeks his name has been linked with Wolves and Ajax. The Dutch champions may be best placed to secure his signature given the history with Suarez, but don’t be surprised to see him in the Premier League next season. Wherever he lands, £3.5million will be an absolute steal for a standout youngster.

Which player does Tomáš Suslov compare with?

With his effortless ability to keep the ball under his spell and a wand of a left foot, Suslov evokes David Silva memories of old. He has a bit to go to reach those heights, but if he keeps on the same path he could become a household name in the coming years.
