Immy Barclay - Keeping the ball rolling
Keep the ball rolling - Immy Barclay takes the podcast hot seat
It’s a balmy 29 degrees, the world is emerging from lockdown and we are at the height of Summer. What better way to spend the day but in a pub garden, sipping a frosty beer or sparkling rose? Talking to Oli from your kitchen table of course.
This week we are very lucky to be joined by the multi-talented Immy Barclay. A sports presenter based in the UK but with an international outlook on life, and a colourful career story. She has worked in Moto GP, Golf, Tennis amongst others, and more recently made her debut for Manchester United TV.
We talk a little bit about how she got started, covering Red Bull Rookies, and how that helped shape her presenting style and how her flair for languages was an important part of getting to know and coax out the personalities of the young athletes taking part. We also touch on her work in Golf, and how some of her favourite moments in sport have come in a golf buggy!
We discuss how sports differ in terms of media approach and how the lockdown has led to her IGTV series #KeepTheBallRolling, where she interviews women in sport, each female athlete she talks to nominates the next. A great idea!
This is one of the main reasons that we contacted Immy. This sort of series shows that creators are not confined to job contracts and specific events. Showing initiative, and talking to successful women at the top of their game, helps to inspire others, something we try to do here at TSB.
We pass the summer afternoon talking about the rise and rise of Instagram, the importance of remaining focused on the positives and serendipity. Such as the time before her presenting career had started, a 4 month sabbatical in Brazil led to an interview with surf legend Kelly Slater, and the drive to carve out a career in sport then followed.
We also discover the all important ‘favourite dog’ fact, and frankly, did not see that one coming.
All that was missing was that beer.
